Two of our East Coast team members stopped by Device Talks Boston, a leading industry event packed with two days of expert-led sessions, hands-on showcases, and great networking. Sessions focused on driving the future of medical device development, commercialization, and innovation.
The energy at the event was contagious, and the conversations were full of fresh ideas and forward momentum. Here are some of the standout highlights from the team:
- Startups pushing boundaries
The Medtech Innovator stage was buzzing with energy as startups shared how they’re pushing boundaries in healthcare. Companies like Flow Medical, makers of a next-gen catheter changing the standard of care for pulmonary embolism, and LimaxBio, offering a surgical adhesive strong enough to lift a heart, impressed the crowd with their potential impact. - Growing role of Ambulatory Surgery Centers
Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) were a hot topic, with many speakers noting their rapid growth and expanding role, and how they are making a positive impact on patient experiences, surgeon burnout, and hospital capacity.Medtech companies are taking notice. Marc Mackey, senior vice president and general manager of enabling technologies at Enovis™, shared how the industry is exploring robotics, AI, and wearable AR (like the compact ARVIS® system) to boost precision with the efficiency that ASCs require.
- Physician wellness
Dr. Ann Marie Joyce, gastroenterologist at Gastro Health of Action, shared her own story of burnout during a keynote panel. Her story about moving to an ASC-based practice, supporting her work-life balance and focus, was a reminder of the role medical device companies play in innovating to support providers as well as patients. - Caring for people and the planet
Sustainability was another key theme. Boston Scientific’s Kathryn Unger, Torey Andrews, and Dr. Rabia de Latour spoke about the importance of aligning patient care with planetary care. They emphasized minimally invasive procedures and improving first-time outcomes to reduce environmental impact. The big takeaway: collaboration will be key. From setting standards to partnering with hospital systems, medtech has a real opportunity to lead the way in greener healthcare.
- AI transforming diagnostics
We weren’t surprised that AI took a front seat at the event. In addition to Marc Mackey’s discussion featuring AI applications in enabling technology, a keynote panel featuring Boston Scientific’s Dennis Cheng, vice president of cardiac diagnostics marketing, and Julie Thompson, R&D director, offered a look at what’s next for AI in diagnostics.A notable topic was the increase in the use of AI in electrocardiogram (ECG) data that can help flag high-risk patients earlier and continuous devices that provide immediate, personalized insights. Predictive and preventive care is here with many opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
- Innovative (and cute) robots on the exhibit floor
The event shared floor space with the Robotics Summit & Expo, and we loved seeing the latest advancements in robotics for healthcare and beyond!
Looking Ahead
Device Talks Boston gave us a front-row seat to the future of medical devices. We’re excited to see these innovations, from smart diagnostics to sustainable practices and human-centered design, drive positive transformation.
